This passage from the book of Deuteronomy is a call to the Israelite people to remember that there is only one God, and to proclaim their faith. These words are still very applicable for families and Christians today. It is very easy to become embarrassed about the role your faith plays in your life, and let it slide to the background. If you are bringing your children up in faith, take the time to consciously teach them, to proclaim what it is you believe and support their spiritual growth. A faith-based family has the benefit of an extra component to support them – God. By giving all your heart and soul to your faith and bringing it to the forefront of both your private and family life, you and your children can live a much more complete and fulfilled existence. These words in Deuteronomy - while being a reminder to follow God - are also filled with wonderful joy and possibility.
4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. 6Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. 7Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. 8Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, 9and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
