Children at Church

There is something wonderful about having children in Church – members of the congregation love to see the future of the Church in services, and taking part in activities. The presence of children can revitalise a Church community.

It’s not always easy to incorporate your child in to the service though. They get bored because they don’t understand. They make too much noise and annoy other people. All of this not only makes it difficult for you to worship, but can make going to Church an uncomfortable experience.

Don’t worry – there are some simple and practical steps that you can take to make it easier for you and your child.

  1. If there is a Sunday School operating, encourage your child to attend. Sunday School is fantastic because it provides children with a programme designed for them. Most Sunday School programmes will also focus on the main bible reading, or theme for the week, which provides children with a link to what the adults are doing in church.
  2. If there is no Sunday School, take something to occupy your child through the adult bits. Churches often have activity packs for children to do that will have a biblical emphasis. Encourage them to participate in the congregational segments of the service.
  3. If your child becomes restless talk quietly to them about what is going on. Restlessness is often a result of not understanding what is happening. Your child is never too young to start learning about how a Church service works. Talking your child through the service, pointing out the important/interesting bits not only involves them in what is happening, but allows you to more actively participate in worship with your child.
  4. Consider getting your child involved in a children’s choir (if there is one). Choirs provide the opportunity to work in a group, learn musical skills, and understand another side of church worship.

Children that have been brought up regularly attending church are comfortable in an adult environment and used to communicating with a wide range of people.

It is wonderful to have children in Church and your child will benefit from being part of the adult environment. You are giving them a wonderful gift by helping them understand worship and build a relationship with God and the Church community.

HOT TIP: encourage your child to take part in all that they can. The more involved they are, the more they are going to appreciate and enjoy going to church. Choirs, serving at the altar, Sunday School, singing the hymns; all of these are opportunities for involvement.
