Psalm 139

When you take some time to think about pregnancy, about how a life is developing inside the womb, it’s a pretty awesome thing. Psalms were often written as songs of praise for the wonderful world God created, and all that he does for those who believe and trust in him. Below is a section of Psalm 139 – written by King David as he meditated on the awe and majesty of God. David was a simple shepherd boy who, through the will of God, rose to become the King of Israel and a great hero for the Israelite Nation. In this psalm he marvels at how wonderful God is that he can make a human child, and the total love that envelopes that child when it lives a life within God’s presence. It is a beautiful and affirming piece of poetry which really shows how precious the gift of life that a mother provides is.

Psalm 139: 13-18

13 For it was you who formed my
inward parts;
you knit me together in my
mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully
and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
that I know very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.
In your book were written
all the days that were formed for me,
when none of them as yet existed.
17 How weighty to me are your
thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
18 I try to count them – they are
more than the sand;
I come to the end – I am still with you.
