The course needs to be run by a trained GAIN Programme facilitator. GAIN
All families will benefit from the skills learnt on GAIN, especially those young people in the 12 – 16 year age group. Both a Parent/guardian and the teen attend the 5 sessions together.
To give parents and teens new communication skills
To equip families with good problem-solving and decision making methods
To identify new techniques to combat peer pressure
To build self esteem in families
To help participants learn cooperation techniques to achieve a win-win result
GAIN stands for Getting Alternative Information Now. There are 5 sessions which take around 2 hours. Facilitators lead the group with discussions, exercises (in teen, parent, family or mixed groups) roll plays and games. The programme is informal, fast moving, interactive and aims to be fun.
Session 1
Verbal and non-verbal communication, the four basic feelings, real listening, reflective listening and How
I block communication.
Session 2
Decision making, ‘I’ messages, circles of authority and problem solving
Session 3
Family contracting, rules, choices and consequences
Session 4
Drugs, alcohol, where can I get help? and making healthy choices
Session 5
Peer pressure, self esteem and family belonging
The facilitators keep to a pretty fast, tight timetable which this makes the session fun for the teenagers.
First there is a welcome and quick ice breaker game
The session is presented by the two facilitators using PowerPoint, roll play examples, group and individual exercises and group discussion
At the end of the session, participants are asked to try some of the new skills outlined during the week and are given a fridge magnet to remind them of that week’s homework.
Supper and a time to chat follow the session.
The cost is $75 per family group. This covers the costs of the Participants Handbook, course resources, administration and a small fee for the facilitators.

This course is unique because both parents
The people skills learnt on the course are applicable to both teenagers
The course does not have any Christian content and can be run for school groups, youth groups, community centers or anywhere there is a need. It can be a non-threatening way for churches to provide a service to the community or for church members to invite people outside the church community
The course can be tailored to include a biblical perspective as the material is in keeping with biblical values
The course is fast-paced and includes games and activities which keep the teenagers interested
